ein Tag, vier große Themen, unzählige Meinungen, Ideen, Wünsche und Träume
Five of us from SNO found the time to present the band's activities specifically in a 6th-grade sports class (while the rest of the band was working at 10 a.m. on a Friday) - Climate Day at Reithmann Gymnasium.
We prepared well to organize an hour and a half for the class in the music room. We started with the recent ORF video, gave a brief introduction of the band, and outlined our approach to various social, political, and climate issues. We reported on which demonstrations we played at and what our other activities are.
A main topic was the blockade of the Brenner Motorway in the spring with the Last Generation, well documented with pictures and videos.
Being talked at for an hour and a half isn't the most exciting thing for high schoolers, so we incorporated several activities into our workshop. In addition to the singing of Bella Ciao we passed out copies of one of our scores (Kingdom Come, a song we have added a political message to warning about the end-game of the climate crisis). We asked the students to honestly share with us their thoughts and opinions by drawing and writing directly on our scores in small groups. The results were quite sobering.
Clearly the controversy surrounding Last Generation's methods also extends to the younger generation, as their civil disobedience actions, such as street blockades and glue campaigns, often lead to discussions.
As a band, we support diverse forms of climate activist engagement, such as Fridays for Future and Kidical Mass, to emphasize the urgency of the climate crisis and advance solutions.
Despite the initial skepticism of the students, the singing of Bella Ciao with saxophone, trombone, and percussion accompaniment was a highlight. Singing it again at the end of the school day in the school's entrance area was somewhat uncomfortable for some students, but it was met with great enthusiasm by the audience and was successfully performed with the addition of a trumpet (thanks, C.!).
Overall: an exciting experience!
